The Bangladesh Bank is set to boost digital banking by expanding permissions for digital banks, aiming for a 100% branchless banking system. This follows a comprehensive guideline issued in June, with 52 applications submitted by various entities, including banks, non-bank financial institutions, MFS providers, and more. Nagad Digital Bank and Kori Digital Bank received letters of intent (LoIs) in October, and three bank-led applicants, Bank Asia-led Digital, BRAC Bank-led bKash Digital Bank, and Digi10, are set to launch digital banks. The BB plans to issue LoIs to three more candidates: Smart Digital Bank, Japan Bangla Digital Bank, and North East Digital Bank. This initiative aligns with the global trend in digital banking growth, offering a cost-effective and user-friendly experience.
