Bay of Bengal Power Company, a joint venture between BPDB and China Huadian Hong Kong Company Limited, is set to establish a 160MW solar power plant in Moheshkhali, Cox’s Bazar. The plant, occupying 150 hectares near the Kuhelia River, will be financed through equity and loans. An international tender for the plant’s design, supply, installation, and commissioning has been issued, with deadlines in late June.
The solar plant will connect to the Matarbari grid substation and allows for future expansion. Moheshkhali is becoming a key energy hub, with developments including a deep-sea port and coal jetty. In 2023, Bangladesh approved 2.19GW of PV projects, driven by policies promoting renewable energy. This shift aims to reduce fossil fuel dependence and position Bangladesh as a renewable energy leader in South Asia.
