Bangladesh Faces Delays in Indian LoC Projects

Economic Tag: Debt, Govt.

Bangladesh is facing delays in Indian Line of Credit (LoC)-funded projects due to contractors and workers abandoning sites after the previous government fell. Despite security assurances, no Indian contractors have returned, worsened by slow fund disbursements since the establishment of the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus. The country is implementing 33 projects under Indian credit lines worth $7.36 billion, with 75% of goods and services required from India. Currently, two projects are under LoC-1, 15 under LoC-2, and 16 under LoC-3.

Ministry of Railway officials report that six ongoing projects are severely impacted by the contractors’ absence, compounded by a complex fund approval process. Over the past four years, Bangladesh has withdrawn 12 projects from the Indian LoC due to complicated terms, with only $1.32 billion disbursed from the total pledged amount of $7.36 billion in the last 12 years.
