Gold prices in Bangladesh have surged to record highs, outpacing even optimistic global projections. As of Sunday, 22-carat gold hit Tk 167,833 per bhori, with one ounce of gold locally priced at Tk 447,548—about Tk 44,824 more than the current international rate. This spike comes after two sharp price hikes in quick succession, as set by the Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (Bajus), which cites the inclusion of VAT and minimum wage costs in the price. Despite international forecasts predicting further global increases, Bangladesh’s gold prices now already exceed both the current and predicted global rates, reflecting local market pressures, regulatory costs, and possibly supply constraints.
