Rice prices in Bangladesh have been rising despite a global decline. The FAO All Rice Price Index dropped by 1.7% in March 2025, down nearly 25% over the past year, reaching a three-year low. However, in Bangladesh, rice prices increased from July-August 2024, peaking just before Eid-ul-Fitr. Medium rice prices rose by Tk 2-4 per kg, and aromatic rice increased by Tk 10-15 per kg. Current prices are 15-20% higher than last year. Factors contributing to the price hike include floods in 2024, currency fluctuations, and government policy, such as the removal of rice import duties and export allowances for aromatic rice. The government aims to import 0.5 million tonnes of rice this fiscal year, with agreements signed for rice imports from India, Pakistan, Vietnam, and Myanmar. The domestic procurement reached 0.54 million tonnes, and government reserves currently hold 0.924 million tonnes.
