In May, Bangladesh’s stock market was the worst performer globally, with the prime index plunging 333 points or 6% due to a severe confidence crisis among local and foreign investors. In contrast, Taiwan led global markets with a 7% return, followed by Pakistan at 5.5% and Vietnam at 3%, according to EBL Securities. From May 1, 2023, to May 30, 2024, the Dhaka Stock Exchange saw a 17% decline, while India’s market gained 18% and Pakistan’s soared by 81%. Experts attribute Bangladesh’s poor performance to regulatory interventions and economic stresses, including rising interest rates and currency devaluation, leading to foreign investors exiting the market.
