Tea production in Bangladesh is projected to decline by 10% this year due to adverse weather, including excessive rainfall and flooding. While heavy rains began in February, they ultimately eroded topsoil, washed away fertilizers, and increased pest infestations, particularly red spider mites, which weakened the plants and reduced yields.
As of September, tea production stood at 4.95 million kilograms, down from 5.47 million kilograms last year, with a target of 10.8 million kilograms now considered unrealistic. Workers face challenges in harvesting due to hardened leaves and reduced irrigation water. Industry leaders stress the need for a balance of rain and sunshine for recovery and call for government support, including low-interest agricultural loans, to sustain the industry, which employs around 700,000 people.
