Bangladesh’s cabinet committee approved a proposal to import 40 megawatt hydro power from Nepal through India. The proposal, submitted by the Bangladesh Power Development Board, will be purchased for five years under a tripartite agreement between the Nepal Electricity Authority, NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited of India, and the PDB. The cost per unit of electricity from Nepal would be Tk 8.17. The power tariff includes a trading margin of Tk 0.59 in favor of India. Bangladesh will also have to pay a transmission charge to India for using its infrastructure. The commencement of electricity supply will be determined during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s upcoming visit to Nepal. The PDB will require around Tk 650 crore to implement the deal.
