The handover of the automated VAT system from the Vietnamese company FPT to local firms in Bangladesh has stalled due to the lack of response from Bangladeshi software companies to the revenue board’s call for takeover. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended FPT’s contract for another six months as no local companies showed interest. The iVAS system, developed with FPT’s support, faces allegations of operational issues and incomplete implementation. While local companies lack the capacity to take over, dissatisfaction persists with FPT’s performance. ICT experts cite reluctance among local firms to inherit an incomplete system and challenges in international tendering. Despite efforts to train NBR officials, skepticism remains regarding their ability to handle the technology. The iVAS, built on SAP, automates VAT processes but faces hurdles in transitioning to local management.
