In 2023, India saw a significant 48% rise in medical tourists from Bangladesh, with 449,570 visitors compared to 304,067 in the previous year. Conversely, India issued 1,432 medical visas to Sri Lankans, marking an 11.7% decline. Myanmar received 3,019 medical visas, a 4% increase, while Pakistanis received 76 visas, down from 106. Indian hospitals noted high demand for treatments like transplants, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, and oncology from Bangladeshi patients. The increase in visitors from Bangladesh is also attributed to cultural and linguistic affinities, as well as improved transport links, including expanded air services between the countries. India’s plan to introduce an e-medical visa for Bangladeshis and establish a new Assistant High Commission in Rangpur aims to further facilitate medical tourism.
