The poverty rate in Bangladesh has increased to 20.5% from 18.7% over the last two years, driven by widening economic inequality. Marginalized communities face growing challenges in accessing resources, while their livelihoods are increasingly threatened. These concerns were highlighted at a national meeting organized by the SDG Action Alliance and the Noakhali Rural Development Society (NRDS), supported by the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP). Factors contributing to this rise include job losses, environmental pressures, and limited social protections, complicating Bangladesh’s efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and reduce inequality. Speakers stressed the urgent need for universal social security to address poverty, exacerbated by global crises and inadequate government action.
