Bangladesh Bank has launched Bangla QR to promote digital transactions, with expenses for its promotion and training to be covered by banks’ CSR funds for the next 18 months. The goal is to make 30% of transactions cashless by 2025 and 100% by 2031, aiming to integrate marginalized people into digital transactions. Expenses eligible for CSR spending include micro-merchant fees during special campaigns, awareness events, transaction costs at markets, and infrastructure expenses. However, travel and accommodation expenses for officials are excluded. Bangladesh Bank officials believe increased digital transactions will reduce irregularities and corruption, urging proper use of CSR funds. Bank and MFS officials suggest continuing existing QR initiatives, viewing Bangla QR introduction as potentially disruptive to ongoing efforts under the Digital Bangladesh program.
