The Bangladesh Bank has issued a new directive requiring all scheduled banks to enhance security measures at their branches. This action follows a recent incident where 149 bhori (1,738g) of gold ornaments were reported missing from a locker at Islami Bank Bangladesh’s Chawkbazar branch in Chattogram.
Previously, the central bank had instructed banks to install CCTV or spy cameras at their entrances, inside, and outside of their branches, and to connect these security devices to their central information network. These cameras are to be operational 24/7, with footage available to nearby police stations if needed.
Despite these directives, many banks have not fully complied. The central bank now mandates additional armed security guards and proper training for them, stressing the importance of immediate compliance to avoid further security breaches. Banks with lax security measures have already been notified by the Bangladesh Bank.
