Bangladesh Bank has mandated that conventional banks with Islamic banking branches or windows must establish help desks for online Islamic banking services at each branch or sub-branch. This directive, issued via a circular, aims to expand Islamic banking activities. Banks are required to set up these help desks with trained and experienced officers in Islamic banking. These desks will exclusively serve customers of authorized Islamic banking branches or windows, facilitating online financial transactions, deposits, withdrawals, and transfers. Separate ‘Islamic Core-Banking’ software must be used for these transactions. The circular specifies that Islamic banking transactions will be conducted through general accounts at Islamic banking branches, ensuring funds are not used for conventional banking purposes. However, customer account opening and investment operations are not allowed through the Islamic banking desk. Branches offering online Islamic banking services must display a prominent banner stating ‘Online Islamic banking services provided’. This initiative aims to enhance customer service and support the growth of Islamic banking in Bangladesh.
