Bangladesh Bank instructed Janata Bank to revoke a Tk 3,359 crore interest waiver for AnonTex Group due to discovered forgeries and scams. Janata must classify AnonTex’s Tk 6,528 crore debt as defaulted loans, pushing its total bad loans over Tk 23,000 crore. The central bank’s directive came after a functional audit found irregularities, with loans wrongly classified as regular. Janata is required to provision 100% against the defaulted loans and report to the Credit Information Bureau. Despite previous orders to investigate loan irregularities, Janata has yet to take legal action. The bank’s bad loans surged from Tk 5,818 crore in 2017 to Tk 17,501.44 crore in December 2022. Moreover, 75% of its loans are concentrated in five branches, posing high risk.
