The Bangladesh Cold Storage Association (BCSA) urged the government to halt potato imports to protect farmers amid a projected bumper harvest of 1.20 crore tonnes in 2025, a 50% year-on-year increase in cultivation. Farmers currently face losses as potatoes sell at Tk 13-14 per kg, below the Tk 18-20 production cost. Despite demand of 85-90 lakh tonnes, imports are rising, with 1.5 lakh tonnes brought from India in FY24. The BCSA fears new import facilitation through nine customs stations will worsen farmer losses during this high-yield season.
