BD Adopts Hong Kong Convention for Safe Ship Recycling

Industry: Logistics & Shipping, Shipping

Bangladesh has joined India as the second sub-continent recycling destination to adopt the Hong Kong Convention on the safe recycling of ships and offshore assets, according to Offshore Energy. After extensive efforts and high-level meetings in Chattogram, the cabinet has given its approval to the resolution. The foreign minister is scheduled to sign the convention into force. Developed by the International Maritime Organization, the convention aims to establish comprehensive standards and guidelines for the safe and environmentally sound dismantling and recycling of ships. In preparation for ratification, Bangladesh has been focusing on improving workplace safety and hazardous material handling in its shipbreaking yards to enhance sustainability and attract global customers. The convention’s implementation is expected to eliminate dangerous and polluting practices in shipbreaking yards, especially in South Asia, which handles 80% of the world’s end-of-life tonnage.
