In a recent bilateral meeting with the French President, the Prime minister noted the relationship’s evolution over five decades. Bangladesh’s exports to France reached $3.29 billion in FY2022-23, a significant increase compared to previous fiscal years, with key categories including knitwear, woven products, home textiles, footwear, fish, crustaceans, and furniture.
On the import side, Bangladesh received goods worth $180 million from France in FY2022, primarily chemicals, machinery, vehicles, and metals. Foreign direct investment from France in 2022 amounted to $12.53 million, reflecting ongoing economic cooperation.
Discussions also covered strategic matters, regional stability, and France’s support for Bangladesh’s Vision-2041 and trade facilitation with the European Union under the GSP+ scheme. Cooperation in infrastructure development, security, climate change, and cultural exchanges were identified as key areas. Macron’s visit marks the second by a French president, with the last visit occurring in 1990. During the visit, two bilateral instruments were signed to enhance cooperation in infrastructure and satellite initiatives.
