On December 15, 2024, Bangladesh signed a two-year agreement with Saudi Arabia to import 400,000 tonnes of diammonium phosphate fertiliser annually from Saudi company Ma’aden. The deal, signed in Riyadh, aims to boost Bangladesh’s food production and ensure food security. With rapid urbanisation and population growth straining the country’s food production capacity, this agreement is crucial. BADC General Manager Ahmed Hassan Al-Mahmud highlighted that the fertiliser from Saudi Arabia would increase productivity and provide training for Bangladeshi farmers. The Saudi imports will meet about one-third of Bangladesh’s annual DAP fertiliser needs. The agreement offers a cost benefit, with fertiliser priced $2 less per tonne than the market average, and a faster import time compared to other countries. Bangladesh has relied on Saudi fertilisers for over 15 years, finding Saudi Arabia a dependable and reliable source.
