Bangladesh has decided not to join the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), led by China, or any other international grouping before the upcoming general election. This decision was made despite previous discussions about the benefits of joining the world’s largest regional free-trade bloc, which encompasses a third of the global population and GDP. The foreign minister acknowledged the potential advantages but stated that the decision to join such platforms would be made after the elections, scheduled for the year’s end. Bangladesh has been evaluating the potential benefits of RCEP membership, including a potential 17% increase in exports and a 0.26% rise in GDP. However, concerns over revenue loss and other potential impacts have influenced this decision.
