In FY24, Bangladesh earned Tk 1,499 crore in tariff revenue from US imports, accounting for just 1.5% of its total Tk 100,819 crore import revenue. During the July–March period of FY25, revenue from US imports stood at Tk 1,010 crore, less than 2% of the Tk 64,439 crore total. US goods worth Tk 28,144 crore made up only 4% of Bangladesh’s Tk 702,230 crore total imports. Among 2,200 US-imported items, just 10 generated over Tk 500 crore in taxes, with motor cars taxed at 150.76% and chemical wood pulp at 20%. The average tariff on US goods is around 3.5%, including all duties. The US has imposed a 37% reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi goods, claiming Bangladesh imposes a 74% tariff—disputed by experts. Economists suggest reducing tariffs selectively and propose broader tariff reforms rather than US-specific concessions, which could violate WTO rules and prompt similar demands from other trade partners.
