In 2022, Bangladesh made a slight advancement in the global mobile connectivity index, achieving a score of 51.3 out of 100, an increase of 1.3 points. However, it lags behind most South Asian countries, with India leading the region with a score of 61, followed by Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and the Maldives.
Bangladesh’s mobile connectivity performance is hindered by affordability issues, as it scored only 43.2 in this category. High taxes and a challenging licensing system in Bangladesh contribute to its poor performance. While Bangladesh excels in network coverage, with a score of 87.4, it performs poorly in network performance, handset affordability, taxation, and spectrum.
The country’s economic conditions and limited access to digital resources hinder citizens’ participation in the digital space. The report by GSMA also notes that global mobile internet adoption is increasing, with 57% of the world’s population now using mobile internet, but the rate of growth has slowed since 2022.
