Ilish, also known as hilsa fish, is a significant global commodity with a presence in 11 countries, including Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Thailand. Bangladesh dominates the market, contributing to 75% of the world’s hilsha production. The unique flavor of Bangladeshi hilsha distinguishes it from others. Approximately 700,000 people are directly involved in hilsha fishing, while 2.5 million engage indirectly in related sectors.
Production figures reveal a substantial growth from 219,000 tons in 1999-2000 to 567,000 tons in 2021-22, with a peak sustainable yield estimated at 702,000 tons. Bangladesh exports 4,000 to 5,000 tons annually, generating Tk350-Tk400 crore in foreign exchange. The Commerce Minister noted a daily catch of about 2,000 tons during peak fishing season.
Interestingly, hilsha is available in supermarkets worldwide, including the US and the UK. Some marketing strategies highlight its origin in Chandpur, Bangladesh, even if it’s imported from Myanmar. This indicates the global demand for this renowned national fish of Bangladesh and West Bengal, India.
