Bangladesh is set to receive nuclear fuel for its first nuclear power plant, bringing the country closer to its goal of nuclear power generation. The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) is expected to commence commercial operation in the first quarter of 2024. The arrival of uranium fuel next September 2023 will mark a significant step forward for the project.
The $13 billion undertaking is being implemented with the support of Russia. Safety measures and necessary infrastructure, such as power transmission lines and telecommunications, will need to be certified by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Once operational, the plant will require refueling every 18 months, with a contract in place for fuel supply from Russia until 2027. In addition, a new smartphone application called “Surja Bidyut” has been launched to assist consumers with the installation and maintenance of solar panels in rural areas.
