BD Trade to GDP Ratio Declining

Economic Tag: GDP, Trade

Despite sustained economic growth of 6.5% over a decade, Bangladesh’s exports and imports as a percentage of its GDP have been decreasing. The import-to-GDP ratio has fallen from 21.2% in FY14 to 10.69%, while the export-to-GDP ratio dropped from 17.2% a decade ago to 7.66% in FY23. This trend has raised concerns about the credibility of national income estimates. Analysts attribute the decline to an inward-looking industrialization strategy with high tariff protection for domestic market-oriented industries, discouraging entrepreneurs from international market engagement. The trade-to-GDP ratio decrease highlights the need for export diversification and utilizing comparative advantages to boost exports and reverse the trend.
