Bangladesh has achieved a significant milestone in expanding its solar energy production with the connection of its first floating commercial solar power plant to the national grid. The Joules Nawab Floating solar plant project features solar panels mounted on specially designed floating platforms in a 22,000 square-meter pond used for fish farming. With a production capacity of 2.30 megawatts, the project contributes to the country’s sustainable development goals and climate change mitigation efforts.
The floating plant, in collaboration with Nawab Auto Rice Mill, generates electricity for the mill and supplies the excess to the national grid. The project, costing approximately $1.5 million, utilizes floaters from Chinese Sungrow, solar panels from Chinese JA Solar, and inverters from German SMA Solar Technology. The success of this venture may pave the way for larger-scale electricity production in reservoirs across Bangladesh.
