The Bangladesh Economic Association (BEA) suggests that recovering less than 1% of black and laundered money accumulated over the past 50 years could add Tk 15,000 crore to state coffers. Specifically, recovering 0.98% of the estimated Tk 1,32,53,500 crore black money would yield Tk 10,000 crore, and 0.49% of the Tk 11,92,815 crore laundered money would provide Tk 5,000 crore.
The BEA proposes a Tk 11,95,486 crore budget for FY24-25, 1.57 times higher than the current year’s Tk 7.60 lakh crore. The association also advocates for an Independent Commission on Corruption and improved digital payment systems to track black money. The Gini coefficient has risen from 0.45 in 2010 to 0.50 in 2022, indicating increased income inequality. The finance minister will present an Tk 8 lakh crore budget on June 6.
