Despite challenges such as a dollar shortage impacting traders’ ability to open letters of credit (LC), Benapole Custom House surpassed its revenue target for the 2023-24 fiscal year by Tk 216 crore. The target was Tk 5,948 crore, but actual collections reached Tk 6,164.59 crore. Increased imports, totaling 1.72178 million tonnes compared to 1.445 million tonnes the previous year, contributed to this revenue boost. Factors like a global economic downturn and higher exchange rates initially affected LC openings, but a surge in high-duty imports towards year-end and government increases in import tariffs helped exceed revenue expectations. Strict measures against tax evasion, including hefty penalties for irregularities, also played a role, alongside imports for major government projects through Benapole.
