At a seminar titled “Sustainable Energy for Bangladesh and Challenges,” Energy Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan announced that the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) will set gas and electricity prices through public hearings, not executive orders. He emphasized plans to drill 50 exploration wells by 2025 and conduct all procurements via open tenders. Dr. Ijaz Hossain from BUET noted a significant shift in energy consumption, with industrial use of grid electricity halving compared to domestic consumption since 2010, mainly due to rural electrification. He warned that without drilling at least ten new gas wells annually, Bangladesh may face increased reliance on imported LNG, with gas demand projected to reach 4,622 mmcfd by 2030. The seminar gathered industry leaders, policymakers, and academics to discuss the energy sector’s pressing challenges.
