Apparel factories participating in the Better Work programme have seen a 5% rise in production efficiency, according to an ILO study. This UN ILO and IFC initiative aims to improve working conditions and boost productivity and profitability in RMG factories. Notably, female supervisors’ wages increased by 39%, enhancing quality control through better-trained staff.
The programme, starting in 2014, has involved 472 factories and 50 global brands, benefiting 1.3 million workers, with 51% being women. Better Work-affiliated firms achieve 5% higher export prices and significantly greater export revenues and volumes compared to non-participants. Workers in these factories enjoy a 5.4% increase in base pay and save an additional Tk552 monthly. The success of Better Work highlights the importance of responsible business conduct, with calls to extend these practices to other sectors.
