The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has requested a price increase for garment items in response to the government’s plan to implement a minimum wage for 4 million garment workers starting in December 2023. BGMEA President emphasized the importance of buyers understanding the wage dynamics in Bangladesh and supporting rational price adjustments. He also urged buyers operating through liaison offices, Action, Collaboration and Transformation (ACT), and the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) to recalculate prices for orders from December onwards.
BGMEA President highlighted the necessity for local garment suppliers to explore new opportunities, innovate, and diversify into cost-competitive product categories. Investment in technology, machinery, and skills was deemed essential for remaining competitive.
The BGMEA also called on the government to address inflation and establish a safety net program, including food rationing, for workers. The association expressed gratitude to buyers and development partners for their support in ensuring worker well-being during challenging times.
