Bangladesh’s garment industry apex body, BGMEA, has appealed to the European Union (EU) to sustain its support for the ready-made garment sector. The BGMEA president urged a focus on sustainability and enhanced socio-economic conditions for workers.
Additionally, BGMEA called for a GSP transitional period extension from three to six years to facilitate smoother least-developed country (LDC) graduation. The EU monitoring mission is assessing Bangladesh’s compliance with the “Everything but Arms” (EBA) trade arrangement. The BGMEA highlighted progress in workplace safety, green initiatives, worker rights, and recent labor law reforms. The industry’s commitment to a higher minimum wage was emphasized, and continued EU support post-LDC graduation was sought for sustained economic prosperity in the sector.
