The largest gas field in Bangladesh, Bibiana, operated by Chevron, is experiencing a decline in production and pressure. Over 40% of the total gas supplied to the national grid comes from Chevron-operated gas fields, and about 98% of the recoverable reserves in Bibiana have already been extracted. The pressure of extracted gas is decreasing, and Bangladesh’s energy sector is concerned about potential disruptions to power generation activities.
Petrobangla, the state-owned oil and gas company, has sent a letter to the distribution company Jalalabad Gas Transmission and Distribution Systems Limited (JGTDCL) requesting preparations to maintain gas supply at the desired pressure to customers and power plants, even with decreased supply and pressure from Bibiana. Energy experts fear the decline in Bibiana’s supply capacity could lead to a critical situation in the energy sector. Chevron is reportedly drilling a new well, Bibiana-27, to increase gas reserves.
