The Bibiyana gas field, the largest natural gas source in Bangladesh, is currently responsible for 45% of domestic extraction. However, over the past two years, the field’s annual production has declined by approximately 225 million cubic feet. This decline has raised concerns among stakeholders and officials from Petrobangla, the state-run agency, who predict that Bibiyana may run out of gas within the next two years if production continues to decline.
Current data of June 2023 shows that 1,128 million cubic feet per day (MMcf/d) of gas is being extracted from Bibiyana’s 26 wells, compared to 1,230 MMcf/d in June last year and 1,351 MMcf/d in June 2021. Experts warn that over-extraction beyond the field’s capacity poses a risk to the country’s largest gas field. Chevron Bangladesh, the operator of Bibiyana, has expressed concerns over the issue and is exploring new wells to maintain production levels. The government is also considering renovating closed gas wells and finding alternatives to reduce reliance on Bibiyana.
