Bangladesh’s exports are set to drive short-term economic growth, despite challenges like high inflation and a weaker currency. BMI’s report indicates a notable improvement in net exports, with a decrease in the trade deficit to $3.9 billion. The devaluation of the currency is expected to sustain export competitiveness. However, BMI’s growth projection for 2023-24 at 5.4% falls below official estimates and pre-pandemic rates. Private investment faces hurdles due to inflation and import restrictions, while robust remittances, amounting to roughly 5% of GDP, provide some support to consumption. Remittances have grown at an average of 22.8% per month since October 2023. However, there are downside risks due to potential energy price increases stemming from regional conflicts.
