BPDB’s FY24 Electricity Purchase Bill Hits Tk 79,390 Crore

Industry: Power

The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) spent Tk 79,390 crore in FY 2023-24 on electricity procurement from IPPs, rental companies, and India. Notably, Adani Power sold 816 crore kWh for Tk 12,147 crore, while Payra coal plant and Summit Group followed with Tk 8,932 crore and Tk 5,641 crore, respectively. BPDB also sourced costly power from other private firms, including United Group and Orion. Despite high-capacity government plants, inefficiencies and dependency on IPPs have led to soaring costs. Experts emphasize efficient coal plants and reduced reliance on rental power to curb escalating expenses and subsidies in the energy sector.
