BTRC Releases Draft Guideline for .bd and .bangla Domains

Industry: ICT Sector

Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has drafted a guideline for administering .bd and .bangla domains, which is open to stakeholders’ opinions. Unlike previous rules, the draft guideline does not require trade licenses for domain registration.

Though the Bangladesh Telecommunication Company currently administers domain registration, the draft guideline said that BTRC itself may act as the registrar or appoint a registrar to administer the Bangla domains. The .bd domain is the internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Bangladesh, while .bangla is the second country code top-level domain granted to Bangladesh in 2011 for web addresses in the Bangla language. Currently, .bd domain registration is available only to Bangladeshi citizens with second-level domain registration, whereas the .bangla domain is not popular due to many hurdles, including the presentation of a trade license.
