The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) plans to auction 25 MHz of the 700 MHz spectrum in 2025 to expand 4G and roll out 5G networks. The total allocable spectrum is 45 MHz, but 20 MHz remains tied up in a legal dispute. The base price is set at Tk 263 crore per MHz, though mobile operators have raised concerns. GSMA warned that auctioning only 2×25 MHz could create artificial scarcity, driving up prices and limiting spectrum efficiency. Experts argue that early operator consultations are needed for fair pricing and optimal allocation. The 700 MHz band, critical for mobile broadband in rural areas, has been adopted globally. A BTRC-formed committee is drafting auction guidelines and engaging stakeholders. This initiative aligns Bangladesh with global trends in spectrum allocation, ensuring better connectivity. However, without at least 10-15 MHz per operator, network efficiency may be compromised, affecting 4G and 5G performance.
