The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) is set to invest Tk 12 crore in purchasing equipment to measure radiation levels from mobile phone towers, aiming to enhance its monitoring capacity nationwide. An open tender (international) has been approved for this purpose.
This move comes in response to a High Court directive urging the BTRC to assess the potential harmful effects of electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation from towers on humans and the environment. While the existing equipment remains operational, it is insufficient to examine all towers nationwide as per the court’s order.
The commission plans to acquire four sets of broadband EMF radiation measurement systems covering a frequency range of 5MGz to 50GHz, along with two sets of broadband EMF area monitoring devices and a central controlling system. Despite concerns, BTRC surveys have found radiation levels from mobile towers well below international safety standards, indicating no threat to public health or the environment.
