The Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) has recommended reducing import taxes on sunflower and canola oil to diversify cooking oil options in the market. Currently, import duties are high: 31-32% for sunflower oil and 37-58% for canola oil, whereas taxes on soybean and palm oil are comparatively lower. The National Board of Revenue recently reduced VAT on soybean and palm oil imports to 5%, temporarily effective until December 15. The BTTC argues that lower import duties on sunflower and canola oil are essential to stabilize prices and reduce dependency on soybean and palm oil. This recommendation comes as global prices for soybean and palm oil have risen, affecting the local market. The BTTC highlights that high import duties make these oils less attractive despite their potential as alternatives, which could improve market stability and consumer choice.
