Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal has presented the budget for fiscal year 2023-2024, proposing a total allocation of Tk113,576 crore for social safety net programs. This accounts for 16.75% of the total budget and 2.55% of GDP. The Ministry of Finance aims to expand the social safety net by including an additional 7.35 lakh beneficiaries, providing support to the elderly, widows, and disabled individuals.
In response to the recent surge in commodity prices, the budget introduces an increase in the monthly old age allowance and widow allowance, marking the first adjustment in a decade. With a total budget of Tk7.61 lakh crore, this is the largest budget in Bangladesh’s history, reflecting significant growth compared to the initial budget of Tk786 crore in FY1972-73. The government aims to stimulate employment through business expansion and enhance investment in state-owned enterprises to create new job opportunities.
