The Ministry of Railways in Bangladesh has put forth a proposal to raise the budget for the construction of the third and fourth railway lines in the Dhaka-Tongi section, as well as the double line in the Tongi and Jaidebpur sections. The cost is set to increase from Tk 848 crore to Tk 2,840 crore, with the project duration extending from three years to 15 years. The amendment proposal has been submitted to the Planning Commission and awaits approval from the National Economic Council’s executive committee.
The revised plan includes the need for higher railway bridge specifications and the installation of 60 kg rail instead of 40 kg rail. Despite the challenges, the Ministry remains committed to improving rail communication with the capital and enhancing transportation infrastructure in the country. The project’s completion is crucial for accommodating increased train frequency and reducing travel times, benefitting both passengers and the overall railway network. Addressing issues of capacity, mismanagement, and planning, experts emphasize the importance of effective implementation and adherence to railway master plans to avoid wastage and delays in future projects.
