The implementation of the revised budget for the fiscal year 2023-24 stands at 84%, while the original budget execution is lower at 79%. Analysis from the Ministry of Finance reveals that national budget execution has stagnated, with actual spending consistently falling about Tk 1 lakh crore short of the announced budget over the past three years. This year, spending was over Tk 1.5 lakh crore less than the original budget. The budget for 2023-24 was set at Tk 7,61,785 crore, later revised to Tk 7,14,418 crore, but only Tk 6,02,256 crore was actually spent, equating to 84.30% of the revised budget. Additionally, interest payments on government debt have surged by 24.5%, exceeding Tk 1 lakh crore for the first time, constituting 28% of total government spending. The total expenditure last fiscal year included Tk 4,05,446 crore for operational costs and Tk 43,678 crore for development. The revenue target was set at Tk 5 lakh crore, but only Tk 4,08,545 crore was collected, achieving 85% of the target, with the National Board of Revenue collecting Tk 3,61,424 crore, or 88% of its target.
