During a press conference titled ‘Unbridled price increase of products in view of Eid,’ the Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has recommended the import of 100,000 cows from India as a solution to mitigate the rising beef prices. The general secretary of CAB presented 13 recommendations during the conference. The proposed measures include displaying product prices prominently in wholesale and retail markets under the supervision of the National Directorate of Consumer Rights. The relevant ministries should ensure the collection, supply, and dissemination of information on daily necessities’ production, demand, and supply.
Strict enforcement of import, wholesale, and retail prices for essential commodities is advised. The CAB emphasizes a zero-tolerance approach towards those creating artificial crises and hoarding, subjecting them to legal consequences. Additionally, the organization advocates for increased cultivation of onion, garlic, ginger, seeds, fertilizers, and mustard, along with financial incentives for beef production. Duty exemption and fixed pricing should accompany the import of commodities like onion, garlic, ginger, soya bean oil, and sugar. The CAB also urges the government to enforce fixed prices for open and packaged sugar, modernize relevant departments for market monitoring, and expedite the clearance of imported perishable goods at ports.
