Bangladesh lost an average of $14 billion annually to capital flight during the 15-year tenure of the Awami League, according to a draft report by a committee preparing a white paper on the economy. Using government documents, global reports, and scientific methodologies, the 12-member committee highlighted how funds were laundered and suggested strategies to curb the practice. Transparency International Bangladesh reported annual siphoning of $12-$15 billion over the last 15 years, while Global Financial Integrity found $8.27 billion lost yearly from mis-invoicing between 2009 and 2018.
The 250-page report, set to be handed to the Chief Adviser on November 3 and released publicly on November 4, includes findings on GDP, inflation, debt, trade, mega projects, and more. It critiques projects like the Padma Bridge and Rooppur nuclear plant and addresses public debt management for 215 foreign-funded projects. Pathways for tackling subsidies, bad loans, and inflation were also recommended.
