Imports of cars through Chattogram and Mongla ports have surged in the last few months of the current fiscal year, raising concerns among consumer goods importers. In May, a record 2,641 cars were imported from Japan, with 1,009 arriving via Chattogram port and 1,632 through Mongla port. The Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (BARVIDA) expects over 800 cars to be imported in June. The increase in car imports is worrying as the country struggles to meet import bills for essential items amidst a dollar crisis.
Importers of consumer goods also face difficulties in clearing shipments due to complications related to letters of credit. Mongla port has become the primary entry point for imported cars, accounting for around 60% of the total. However, the decreased car imports have negatively impacted revenue for Mongla Customs. The port is now preparing to auction 147 reconditioned cars that were not redeemed by importers within the specified period.
