City residents are increasingly turning to debit and credit cards for festive shopping and other transactions, driven by convenience and the pandemic-induced shift towards cashless payments. The use of prepaid cards, especially among the younger demographic, is also on the rise, simplifying tasks like commuting and bill payments. Plastic card transactions have tripled since the pandemic, reaching Tk 90,432 crore by December 2023. The number of cards has surged to 4.21 crore, including 3.46 crore debit, 51.21 lakh prepaid, and 23.98 lakh credit cards. Bankers attribute this trend to the growth of e-commerce and international travel, supported by regulatory initiatives like the “Cashless Bangladesh” campaign. As technology evolves and security improves, card transactions are poised for further expansion, transforming Bangladesh into a cashless society.
