Cement clinker imports rose by 5%

Cement clinker imports rose by 5% to reach 1.77 crore tonnes, and broken or crushed stones saw an impressive 80% increase during the fiscal year 2022-23. This growth is attributed to the flourishing construction industry and government infrastructure projects. Revenue from these imports increased significantly, generating Tk381 crore from cement clinker, Tk626 crore from broken or crushed stones, and Tk2,949 crore from high-speed diesel.

Demand for cement clinker increases annually by 7%-8% due to ongoing infrastructure development and mega projects. In the January-June period of 2023, 1,144.86 tonnes of cement clinker, valued at Tk7,481.4 crore, were released through multiple customs houses. In 2022, the total import of cement clinker through these customs stations was 2,328.17 crore tonnes, worth Tk13,407 crore.
