The central bank has reduced the special incentive for the readymade garment (RMG) sector from 0.5% to 0.3%, effective immediately until June 30, 2025. This reduction is part of the government’s plan to prepare for LDC graduation in 2026. The second incentive cut in five months is expected to reduce the Tk8,000 crore spent on incentives in FY 2022-23. Incentives for new market ventures have been reduced by 1% to 2%, affecting sectors like jute, leather, frozen fish, and agro products. The highest incentive rate for agro products has decreased from 15% to 10%. Crust leather is the only product to see an increase, from 0% to 6%. The RMG sector fears the incentive cuts will increase costs and reduce export competitiveness, especially amid rising gas, and electricity prices, and interest rates on bank loans. Exporters argue that incentives should remain until LDC graduation to maintain market competitiveness.
