In the fiscal year 2022-23, Bangladesh reported exports of over $55 billion, as per the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB). However, the Bangladesh Bank’s updated report, ‘Annual Export Receipt of Goods and Services 2022-23,’ reveals that the funds received in the banking channel for exported goods amounted to a little over $43 billion.
This discrepancy of around $12 billion or 21.57% raises concerns among experts, highlighting the need for alignment between government organizations to ensure accurate national export data. The Ministry of Commerce formed a committee to investigate the disparity, emphasizing the importance of defining export-related data and addressing issues such as over and under-invoicing, recognized globally as potential money laundering.
The differences also underscore the need for improved monitoring systems by the Bangladesh Bank to strengthen the integrity of export statistics. Garment exporters and industry representatives express reservations about the reliability of EPB’s figures compared to those of the Bangladesh Bank. Efforts are underway to bridge the gap and ensure accurate accounting in the export sector.
